Investigative journalism must be reproducible. We explain our reporting procedures in detail because public interest reporting requires complete transparency of both evidence and methodology.
Our Reporting Cycle
Every project begins with a question about an institutional, corporate, or administrative process where citizens are impacted by power. Here is how our team develops a story:
1. ACQUISITION OF EVIDENCE
We look for primary records: tax logs, commercial registry filings, environmental assessments, litigation briefs, and corporate charters. If public files are not accessible, we initiate Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) requests or collaborate with secure whistleblowers.
2. AUDITING & REPRODUCIBILITY
If we obtain custom spreadsheets or datasets, we do not merely copy the figures. Our team cleans, reorganizes, and verifies the math. We run cross-correlation checks with historical registers to verify authenticity.
3. TRACING CORROBORATING SOURCES
We seek out individuals with direct, first-hand knowledge of the events. We record statement interviews and present our findings to industry specialists to ensure our interpretation matches professional administrative standards.
Our Standard Checklist for Critical Statements
Before we approve an investigative article for release, the reporter must complete three verification checks:
- Double Document Match: Any core financial claim must match at least two distinct official records from separate registries.
- Subject Opportunity: The subject must be sent specific questions in writing, with reasonable time allowed for response. We do not edit or truncate their substantive responses.
- External Legal Review: Complex reports on sensitive litigation, audits, or structural disputes are reviewed by counsel to ensure objective alignment with municipal laws.
